When it comes to replacing the optical drive is it better for me to simply put the new SSD where the Optical was, or should I put the original HDD in the Opitcal bay and put the SSD where the original hard disk was? Or does it not make a lick of difference?

When I go through the whole procedure, the RAM will be super easy. When I put in the SSD, I'm looking at putting in this Crucial 500GB drive:īut am open to suggestions on better options. Am I better off going with the generic, or is there something about the Data Doubler that makes it worth $30? I've seen the OWC Data Doubler, but also some other optical bay drive adapters that are only about $10. I've changed out Hard Drives before just to do a size increase, but I've never had an SSD before or had a computer running 2 drives. The other thing I'd like to do is trade out my Optical Drive and add an SSD to the laptop, while keeping my original 512GB HDD in the machine. If anyone can recommend why I should go with a different option, I'm all ears, but this seemed like a good choice to me in terms of price/performance. I'm looking to double it to 8GB with this: This machine did suffer from the graphics issues that plagued many of this year/model of machine, but I was lucky enough that the symptoms appeared when my AppleCare was still active, so I had the issue fixed awhile back and know that the machine can still last a decent amount of time.

The update to Yosemite in particular feels like it has REALLY slowed down my machine and also greatly reduced the battery life.Īs much as I'd love to drop $3k on a new 15" Retina MBP and gain the Retina display, USB 3, and lots of other awesomeness, I know it'll be a lot more cost-effective to upgrade this machine and make it last another year at least. I'm running an early 2011 15" MBP, which is starting to feel long in the tooth after over 4 years of usage. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
